On January 1st 1994, William (Billy) Blount opened his doors for business. Starting out as an underwriter in Dallas when he graduated from college—then bringing his expertise to Knoxville.
He is proud to be celebrating a milestone; his 20th year reaching out to the community to meet their insurance needs.
His agency; William Blount and Associates have two divisions: Personal insurance (home, auto and life), Business insurance and Risk Management for small, mid-sized and growth oriented businesses. They insure over 800 businesses across several states, but most of their clients are in Tennessee.
They maintain two offices, one in Knoxville and one in Nashville. His son, Michael works in the Nashville office as a commercial broker. His wife, Mary has her own laboratory consulting business.
After years as an underwriter in Dallas, Billy just felt it was time to do what he had always dreamed of—becoming a business owner. “I love what I do and I truly cannot wait to get to work on Monday morning.”
“Our goal,” says Billy, “is not to be the largest agency in town…we want to be the most trusted. For businesses, we help answer two fundamental questions that almost every business has when it comes to insurance. (1.) Do I have the right protection (2.) Am I paying too much? For individuals we help protect their personal assets and utilize many different insurance companies to tailor their price to their needs.”
Billy understands how complicated and confusing the industry can be, so he tries to “demystify” it as much as possible. He relates, “I have always loved teaching and this gives me an opportunity to teach, but in the business setting. Plus, this gives me a context to integrate my work and my faith.”
His best advice, when it comes to insurance, is to find a broker that you can trust and rely on to give you good advice. “Some insurance companies have done a good job convincing people that the only thing you should focus on is how much money you can save in fifteen minutes. Price is important, but there can be big differences in policies."
William recounts that, “Though I was born in Mississippi, I am related to the William Blount who was the first governor of Tennessee. So when I moved to Knoxville over thirty years ago, I truly felt I had come home.”
He and his family moved to the Gettysvue neighborhood nine years ago and his company is located less than a half of a mile from Gettysvue. Community cohesiveness is part of his commitment to their neighborhood through residence and business.
Their favorite part about their neighborhood is on their own street, “where we can stroll after supper and talk with our terrific neighbors.
Billy believes that individuals and businesses who have “more” have to ask the question “why”. His feelings are “if we have “more” I believe there is an implied responsibility to share it with others. This is a conviction that I am really just learning, but getting the opportunity to travel and be in places of abject poverty has been humbling and life changing.” His wife, Mary and their son, Sam have been involved with him and a team of friends in Knoxville to help provide clean water in Uganda, Guatemala and Haiti while also traveling frequently to Africa.
Hobbies and activities include hiking solo in the mountains to help him create time and space to be quiet and listen and to ponder how much he has to be grateful for.
